Broadway in Houston 17/18 Season Announced

A few days ago I made my predictions as to which shows would be part of Broadway Across America’s 2017-2018 Houston season. So how did I do – and which shows are now confirmed to visit The Hobby Center next season? Here’s the full line-up:

We’ve know for some time that “Hamilton” would be coming to Houston during the season, but now we have the official dates: April 24 – May 20, 2018. Yesterday saw the announcement of the tour cast – and it’s fantastic. Here’s hoping that this ensemble stays intact for the visit here.

This one wasn’t even on my radar and quite frankly, other than the obvious reference to Jimmy Buffett I’ve never heard of it. Here’s the official “description” of this show:

“Imagine a place where the sun is hot, the ocean’s warm, and the drinks are as cold as they are plentiful. Welcome to Margaritaville, the island paradise where city folk get away from it all and the locals get into the kind of trouble you can almost always sweet talk your way out of.

Featuring both original songs and your most-loved Jimmy Buffett classics, this new musical is the story of a part-time bartender, part-time singer, and full-time charmer named Tully who thinks he’s got life all figured out. Until a beautiful career-minded tourist steals his heart and makes him question everything.”

In the past, this series has announced shows like “I Love Lucy Live” and “Cheers – Live on Stage” only to cancel them after one or two cities. We’ll see if this one actually makes the cut or not.

“Escape to Margaritaville” will play The Hobby Center October 31 – November 5, 2017.

Touring this show makes absolute sense. Filled with hit songs, it’s a crowd pleaser in the tradition of Mamma Mia! or Jersey Boys.

“On Your Feet” arrives November 21 – November 26, 2017.

I really enjoyed this show when it toured the first time around and the new Broadway production is getting rave reviews. I’m excited to see what they’ve done to improve this already good show. No casting has been announced yet but I expect that at least one or two key roles will be filled with “names” as they have done in New York City. Time will tell.

“The Color Purple” plays January 9 – January 14, 2018.

The first of two Andrew Lloyd-Webber shows in the season, this musical based on the hit film will play The Hobby Center January 30 – February 4, 2018.

The show that couldn’t make it in London and never made it to Broadway will, surprisingly, make it to Houston. At least that’s what they’re saying now. Much like the aforementioned “I Love Lucy” and “Cheers” I could see this one either failing miserably or being a huge hit on the road. Let’s hope they’ve fixed the many issues with it. The show does have a lovely score and lots of potential but the last version I saw needed lots of work.

“Love Never Dies” plays July 17 – July 22, 2018.

There is also one subscriber special (add-on) – “Riverdance 20th Anniversary.” That show will arrive March 9 – March 11, 2018.

Other than “Riverdance” and “Margaritaville” my predictions were pretty much right on. Theatre Under the Stars should release their schedule soon and we’ll see if I do as well with those shows.
